CIPD Urges Better Evaluation of Coaching
The 2010 Survey report into Learning and Talent Development by the UK’s professional HR body, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), has recently been published and makes a clear plea for more and better evaluation of coaching.
“Evaluation needs to be a future priority for practitioners or the real value of coaching will be obscured. No learning and talent development intervention is beyond measurement although it is vital to ensure that this evaluation is meaningful”.
Making Managing and Evaluating Coaching one of the core themes this year, the survey found that whilst 82% of organisations are deploying coaching, only a third (36%) have a system to evaluate it. Of these, only 40% are measuring the return on expectation. In total, this means that less than 15% of those organisations deploying coaching are making a serious attempt to evaluate whether it’s worth the money!
Another notable trend is the way in which coaching is being deployed, with a 4% increase in the use of managers as coaches and a 2% decrease in the use of external practitioners. This may of course be a reflection of leaner times but you can’t help but wonder if another factor might not be the fact that external practitioners are clearly not utilising tools like the Bullseye Coaching model to unequivocally prove the value they bring to their customers?
