Many of us will be watching nervously as the World’s public sector looks to reduce costs by up to 25% over the next 3 or 4 years.  This is because anyone who has worked in employee development for any length of time will know the scenario.  Just when an organisation needs to be investing in its people in order to enable it to deliver the same, or preferably more, with less, the L&D budget is slashed because it hasn’t protected itself properly. 

This is because the L&D profession is generally pretty poor at providing meaningful evidence of the value it produces.  Yet tools like the Bullseye Coaching model, that enable organisations to calculate and report the return on investment from L&D in real ‘hard’ cash-terms, are out there and are both easy and cheap to access.  And believe me it’s much harder to cut a budget that can prove it adds many, many times more value than it costs, than one that can’t.

So come on Public Sector L&D!  Don’t let the cost-cutters slash your budget just when the people you serve need it the most.  Start measuring the ROI from what you do today.  Doing so might not just save your job and your budget.  It might just save your organisation and the services it was set up to provide too.
